Last year we had the pleasure on working on a trendy modern farmhouse right here in Los Angeles. The modern farmhouse trend persists throughout the country and takes on various forms and spin-off styles like this home we recently completed. Partnering with incredible team at White Sands Coastal, we brought this modern coastal farmhouse to life. Here are some of our favorite architectural design details that make this coastal farmhouse so distinctive:<\/p>\n

10. Stone Materials<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"Last<\/p>\n

Many designers will indicate the importance of choosing one item or material that seems out of place when compared to the rest of the space. That is what gives a home it\u2019s designer touch. Certain stone countertops and walkways don\u2019t necessarily scream \u2018farmhouse\u2019 but give the space an exciting luxurious, elevated (and surprising) feel. <\/span><\/p>\n

9. Wooden Materials<\/b><\/h2>\n

Exposed wood furnishings and plank wood flooring contrasts with the stone to give the home its casual, beachy feel. <\/span><\/p>\n

8. Ceiling Details<\/b><\/h2>\n

When working in a monochromatic palette, the ceiling is a great place to add some visual interest, drawing the eye up. Beams, shiplap, and custom millwork subtly define this home\u2019s coastal farmhouse style.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Fireplaces<\/b><\/h2>\n

\nFireplaces are these giant holes in walls that provide great design opportunity! In this home, we kept them clean and modern. They\u2019re extremely durable; made of cement, stone, and wood. They\u2019re focal points that combine materials in a modern way, a motif that runs throughout the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Industrial Features<\/b><\/h2>\n

Throughout this home, the lighting & hardware in bathrooms accents the industrial design, an intrinsic feature of the modern farmhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Farmhouse Features<\/b><\/h2>\n

You don’t have to go theme-overboard to make a statement. That said, If it doesn\u2019t have a farmhouse sink, does it really count?\u00a0\ud83d\ude09 Farmhouse style front and side doors really drove the theme home without being too obvious.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Shiplap Walls<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"e\u2019re<\/p>\n

The style made infamous by a certain HGTV couple has some designers screaming \u2018is it over yet?\u2019 But we\u2019re here to tell you shiplap walls are here to stay, at least for a while! They may be a passe design trend in suburban homes but are an intrinsic feature of the coastal farmhouse. What makes them great is that they add direction and texture in a clean, monochromatic space. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Color Palette<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"One<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re working with a modern style, you\u2019re likely combining a number of different designs styles, to varying degrees; some of which we\u2019ve already mentioned: farmhouse, industrial, coastal. One of the best ways to combine design styles without making your home look like a messily-stitched patchwork quilt is to keep the palette clean and simple. The palette for this home is creamy and monochromatic with the occasional blue accent. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. The Tiny, Shiny Design Details<\/b><\/h2>\n

House Numbers, knobs and pulls, air vent covers, and faucet hardware help break up what could otherwise be a sterile palette by adding a little shimmer. Mixing metals it always a great way to accomplish this.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Indoor Outdoor Living – Windows and Doors<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"Living<\/p>\n

Living at the beach is all about highlighting those fabulous coastal views! The windows and doors throughout this home are giant, floor to ceiling and easily slide to create the home\u2019s seamless design from indoor to out. Remember: Keep it subtle. You never want design to compete with an incredible view.<\/span><\/p>\n
