They\u2019ll be working for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so be sure to address any concerns or additional services you may want\/need prior to signing a contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few of the questions you\u2019ll want to have in mind when vetting your contractor:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When can the contractor start and do they have enough resources\/bandwidth to commit to your job? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you like this person?\/Do your personalities jive well together?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long has the contractor been working in this industry? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many projects have they worked on and what type of projects?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has the contractor attended any type of formal training or continuing education? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the contractor licensed to practice as a general contractor? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the contractor have a valid workman\u2019s comp insurance policy for their employees that will be on your site? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the contractor \u00a0only employs subcontractors, do they have valid insurance and licenses? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the contractor \u00a0have insurance in case something in your home gets broken in the renovation and\/or construction process? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the projected timeline for the project? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if the construction goes past the stated finish date? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often will the contractor or his project manager stop by to check on the progress? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the contractor plan to work on the project personally or assign a supervisor? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often should I be updated on progress? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who pulls the permits for a project? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who meets with the inspectors? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What hours should I expect a contractor to work?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has the contractor been involved with any legal disputed following a previous job? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has the contractor previously operated as a contractor under a different name? Is a new baby on the way? Have a very clear clause in your contract about how the contractor will record, handle and bill for the change orders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A contract is a good communication tool to make your project run as smoothly as possible, as it is a written understanding of what is expected from each side. \u00a0It should be referred to throughout the process.
